On September 14, AB ORLEN Lietuva – a Lithuanian company managed by the Polish economy and energy transformation leader – Concern PKN ORLEN together with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Vilnius organized the Conference ‘Wind Energy in the Baltic Sea’. The Conference attended by representatives of the public and private energy sectors of the two countries took place at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland located in the capital Vilnius. The Conference attendees were welcomed by the Vice Minister of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania Daiva Garbaliauskaitė, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland to the Republic of Lithuania Urszula Doroszewska, also the initiator of the Conference – AB ORLEN Lietuva General Director Michal Rudnicki.
Expansion of wind power generation in the Baltic Sea has been included in the National Energy Strategy, and the National Energy and Climate Plan. Use of offshore wind is expected to reduce electricity import from other countries, increase the scope of local electricity generation from renewable sources; this is also a way to attract world-class investors into the Lithuanian energy sector.
Representatives of the Lithuanian and Polish energy sectors in the Conference discussed on wind energy expansion opportunities in the Baltic Sea, hydrogen generation technologies and other topics regarding sustainable energy. Conference guests from the neighbouring Poland shared their insights into the development of the country’s offshore energy sector, improvement of the efficiency of offshore windfarm energy consumption, also presented their good practice in the development of the national electric energy system as well as legal acts.

Generation of electricity from renewable energy sources (RES) is one of the main fields of development included in ORLEN2030 strategy for the nearest decade. It is planned that before 2030 the installed RES capacity of the entire ORLEN Group should be 2.5 GW comprising 1.7 GW in offshore wind farms and 0.8 GW in onshore (wind and solar) power generators. The Group will also increase the installed capacity of its modern gas-fired power plants from today’s 1.1 GW up to 2.0 GW. Installing of own pilot energy storage facilities is being considered so to optimize the costs of electricity distribution.
