ORLEN Lietuva, the only oil refining company in the Baltic States, has expanded its electricity generation capacity with a 42.2 MW solar power park. According to the company’s General Director, Dariusz Zonenberg, this marks an important step in reducing the company’s environmental impact.
“For the first time, we will generate renewable electricity ourselves, thereby not only protecting the environment but also reducing our costs. We expect the solar park to generate 45 GWh of electricity annually, covering approximately 7% of our annual electricity demand and enabling annual savings of around EUR 4 million. Furthermore, renewable energy and decarbonization are part of the ORLEN Group’s long-term strategy, and we are pleased to contribute to its implementation” he and added that the total investment in the project amounted to almost EUR 35 million, of which EUR 2.5 million was provided through support from the European Union Modernisation Fund.
According to Giedrius Dapkevičius, ORLEN Lietuva’s Director of Energy, the solar power park has been built on the refinery’s premises and is divided into four main sections. It covers a total area of 60 hectares and consists of approximately 68,000 bifacial solar panels, each with a peak capacity of 620 W.
“These advanced panels absorb sunlight from both sides, providing higher efficiency even under low-light conditions. Compared to conventional solar modules, they can generate up to 30% more electricity” he noted.
ORLEN Lietuva has been the largest taxpayer in the country for several years and is a very important part of the Lithuanian economy. Since 2006, for the acquisition and modernization of the refinery in Mažeikiai, ORLEN has invested almost EUR 4.5 billion. In addition, ORLEN Lietuva operates the crucial Būtingė terminal in Lithuania, the main port for feedstock supplies, and the Mockava railway terminal, an important transshipment station for the smooth export of products.
ORLEN Group is an integrated, diversified energy group, included in the prestigious Fortune Global 500. It was the first group in the region to announce its ambition to achieve climate neutrality targets in 2050. ORLEN Group today operates in more than 10 markets.
