Local Initiatives Revive Lithuanian Mansions

On 30 April 2011, ORLEN Lietuva Refinery employees and managers attended a traditional voluntary clean-up at Renavas Mansion, owned by Mažeikiai Museum. 120 trees have been planted by the Refinery employees in Renavas Park since 2008.

“I am very proud that our employees’ initiative (which started four years ago) to devote some time for Renavas Mansion clean-up each Spring successfully gets on. Such voluntary work is extremely important for fostering historical heritage and consolidation of the local community,” said Ireneusz Fąfara, ORLEN Lietuva General Director, who also took part in this traditional clean-up together with over 60 employees of the company on Saturday at Renavas Mansion.

The Ensemble of Renavas estate, founded in the middle of the 19th century, is famous for Lithuania’s thickest Norway Spruce (Picea abies), growing in the park. In 1960, the spruce was announced to be a natural monument. The diameter of the spruce’s trunk at the height of the chest reaches 1.2 meter.

Deividas Makavičius, the head of Renavas Mansion, stated that any support in cleaning and attending the manor area is highly needed because at the moment only renovation of the main building of Renavas Mansion only is being funded from the EU Structural Funds. Additional funds for territory maintenance and landscaping have not been received.

“We highly appreciate this action by ORLEN Lietuva employees, contributing to the park fostering, maintenance and clean-up works. It is especially valuable that little by little the old park of the mansion is cleaned and maintained,” told D. Makavičius.

The project of Renavas Mansion Adaptation to Public Tourism is intended for complex renovation and adaptation of Renavas Manor to tourism. The plan is to set up the handcraft center, conference and exhibition halls by 2013.
