Environmental Situation in the Butinge Terminal Area is Stable

BÛTINGË — Representatives of governmental institutions were presented Butinge Terminal Environmental Monitoring Report for 2003 on Friday, February 27. Klaipeda University Coastal Research and Planning Institute has been monitoring the environment at the Butinge Terminal and coordinating the survey for the fourth year.  The data collected during the monitoring process in 2003 indicate that the environmental situation in the Butinge Terminal area is stable and represents the current status of the Baltic Sea .

The Environmental Research Laboratory of AB Mazeikiu Nafta has been performing the air monitoring of the Terminal impact area for the fourth year, and it has not detected cases of pollution above the permitted levels.  The scientists of Vilnius University performed the shore monitoring, UAB Grota performed the underground water monitoring, Marine Research Center performed the hydro-chemical and hydro-biological monitoring and Fishery Research Laboratory performed the ichthyologic monitoring.

According to Arvydas Kukulskis, AB Mazeikiu Nafta Chief Ecologist, “A detailed and reliable database has been created during the four years of the monitoring program since the start of the Butinge Terminal operations.  Environment protection has been and remains of high importance to our company.  Today we can see the results of our efforts.” 

According to the experts of UAB Grota, the composition of the ground water at the Butinge Terminal is typical for this area.

According to the scientists of Vilnius University who monitored the shore at the Butinge Terminal, the positive shore self-restoration tendencies have been observed in the past years.  The Report contains data that a thicker layer of sediments has formed on the seashore and sand is accumulating at the foot of the dunes. 

Klaipeda Region Environmental Protection Department on the recommendation of the Environmental Protection Agency has approved a new monitoring program for 2004 through 2006.  The environmental monitoring of the Butinge Terminal will be continued.
