On the occasion of the International Year of Chemistry, ORLEN Lietuva has instituted a scholarship for PhD students in the field of chemistry. Applications by young scientists will be evaluated by an expert commission formed by the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.

The General Assembly of the United Nations has adopted a resolution proclaiming the year 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry. The oil refining company ORLEN Lietuva will contribute to the initiative with a program propagating chemical science and encouraging involvement in such; the program is patronized by the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO.  One of the key focuses of the program is larger attention to young scientists’ works, universities and student-developed initiatives.

"The International Year of Chemistry provides a good opportunity for us to reevaluate the significance of chemistry in our daily life.  New scientific discoveries in chemistry may become a significant drive for enlarging human understanding, promoting economic development and creating a sustainable environment,” said Ireneusz Fąfara, General Director of ORLEN Lietuva.

Lithuanian Academy of Sciences will evaluate applications for, administer and assign the one-off LTL 10,000 scholarship for PhD students enrolled in the continual studies of chemistry instituted by ORLEN Lietuva in 2011. The aim of this scholarship is to support scientific research and creative activities of gifted young scholars.

The deadline for the submission of applications for ORLEN Lietuva scholarship for PhD students is June 14, 2011. The results of the scholarship contest will be announced by 1 July and the scholarship awarded in the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in September.
